Recently, I was asked to sit on a panel at an event to celebrate Dermalogica’s new firming system, and I shared some of my skincare secrets. Skincare is a huge priority to me, and I am a firm believer that with discipline, everyone can have great skin. One of the questions I was asked was about the effect moving from New Zealand to Los Angeles had on my skin, as the two climates are completely opposite. LA is extremely dry, while New Zealand is very humid, so adaptability has been essential! It is important to understand change, and to cater to your skin based upon different context.

Context, of course, goes beyond just weather/climate, but also includes more micro-level factors, such as nutrition, time of the month, weekly deadlines, daily chores, stress level, and more – as all of these can impact our skin. This is where both adaptability and consistency come in with my approach to skincare.

My personal trick and recommendation is to take time to reflect on your skincare needs and what may impact them each week. I love to do this every Sunday evening while my hubby is writing emails. Get really in tune with your skin and its needs, and then select the products that you’re going to use for that week. If you’re just starting out, choose no more than five items so you don’t get overwhelmed, but if you already have an established skincare routine, use as many as you need. I like to set my weekly selections out on a little tray on the countertop in my bathroom for easy access, and recommend putting everything else out of sight so it doesn’t overwhelm and distract you.

From there, you simply have to follow through with your plan every day for the next week. I live by the quote “Good skin is a matter of discipline,” because I feel that those who take care of their skin, even if they genetically have more challenges in healthy skin, will reap the rewards and can still have an incredible complexion, where conversely, someone blessed with perfect skin can ruin it with neglect and wind up facing issues like cystic acne. Choosing the right products to suit your skin and using them consistently is sure to give you a healthy, beautiful glow!

If one of the issues you’d like to address in your skin is aging, you may want to choose the new Phyto-Nature Firming Serum from Dermalogica (the product from the event) as one of your five (or more, if you’re established) products for your weekly routine. It’s vegan, cruelty-free, and is free of parabens, gluten, and artificial fragrances and colors. It flash firms to minimize the appearance of fine lines, even the first time you use it! It also doubles the skin’s luminosity after only one application and lifts the skin, reducing visible wrinkles in only four weeks. It is a dual-phase serum, and uses hyaluronic acid, Camu Camu, Moroccan Rockrose Extract and Madagascar Green Coffee Bean to visibly tighten skin and counteract visible signs of aging that can be expedited by environmental and lifestyle factors.

The right products used consistently can be a game-changer for your skin, and if you’re hoping to age gracefully and diminish the impacts a harsh environment, stress, and past damage to your skin has, you may want to add Dermalogica phyto-nature firming serum to your morning and evening routine!
